Her older sister Jessica is also a famous pop singer.

Simpson was born in Waco, Texas and raised in Richardson. She is the daughter of Joe Truett Simpson (a former Baptist youth minister who is now her manager) and Tina Ann Drew (a former Sunday School teacher who homeschooled Ashlee). An accomplished dancer, Simpson began studying classical ballet at the age of three, and was admitted to the School of American Ballet in New York City at the age of eleven.

Ashlee became a part of Jessica's stage show, dancing in the background and supporting her sister. But Ashlee was determined to break free from the shadow of her famous sis and in 2001 she did exactly that.
Ashlee Simpson's first album, Autobiography, debuted at number one in the U.S. in July 2004 with first week sales numbering around 398,000 copies. The album was certified triple platinum in September 2004.
Ashlee's first solo television appearance was in a small role on Malcolm in the Middle. She also appeared with Jessica on Saved by the Bell, The Donny & Marie Show, The Rosie O'Donnell Show, The View, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and a Disney Christmas show and concert special.

Ashlee is now set to stake her own claim in the entertainment world. She is in the process of signing her own recording deal and has been talking to MTV about doing her own show. She has also been training with renowned acting coach Janet Alhanti. Ashlee has a somewhat different, more rock-oriented image than that of her sister. Previously blonde like Jessica, she dyed her hair dark during the recording of the reality show, after she had finished filming for 7th Heaven (although she has said that the change of hair color was not intended to separate herself from Jessica), and her songs have rock elements absent from her sister's music.
