Brewster was born in Panama City, Panama to Alden Brewster, an American investment banker and Maria Joao Leal de Sousa, a former Sports Illustrated swimsuit model from Brazil. Brewster studied at the Convent of the Sacred Heart in New York and graduated from the Professional Children's School in New York. She then enrolled at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, graduating in 2004. Her paternal grandfather Kingman Brewster, Jr. was president of Yale from 1963-1977.

Career 
Brewster made her debut on the daytime soap opera, All My Children, in a one-time appearance playing Anita Santos. Brewster returned back to daytime on As the World Turns as Nikki Munson from 1995 to 1998. It was her role as Mia Toretto in The Fast and the Furious that has been her most popular role to date. Her most current role is "Chrissie" in New Line Cinema's terrifying prequel to the 2003 remake"The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" which centers around four young kids free-spirited road trip, that quickly turns in to a nightmare, "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning" which is set for a October 4, 2006 release.

Personal life
She dated Mark Wahlberg from 2000 to June 2001 and has also recently dated Derek Jeter and Jay Penske. In 2002 Stuff magazine named her the 96th hottest woman in their "102 Sexiest Women in the World". In 2005 Maxim magazine named her the 54th sexiest woman in the world in their annual Hot 100. In 2006 Maxim ranked her at #59 on their Hot 100.
